The Truth Is, I Had To Start Over

entrepreneurship marketing Oct 29, 2024
Recently on threads I saw a post from someone who said "I'm a personal trainer looking to grow my business online... where do I start"

Threads, by the way, has totally reinvigorated my love for social media.

Quick side note—posted a pic of my horse, Winston, on Instagram and…crickets. But on Threads? 870 comments! Hilarious, right? Anyway, back to business.

When I saw this post I honestly had so many thoughts.

It got me thinking about what I would do if I had to start my business over from scratch, especially since this year has forced me to revisit the basics in a big way.

I mean - it was just June that I was looking around wondering where the heck all my leads went (which turns out is pretty normal if you break your leg and go into survival mode for 12 weeks).

So if you're just starting out or need a reset like I did, here are the four things I would focus on:
  1. Start showing up online: Even if you’re only talking to 5 people—those 5 can turn into 50 over time. Show up authentically and share what you’re passionate about.
  2. Work for cheap or free: Yup, you read that right. In the beginning, working for free or low-cost helps you gain experience, build social proof, and get those crucial testimonials.
  3. Build that email list: I waited too long to take email marketing seriously, and now it’s the backbone of my business. Start with a lead magnet (a PDF, private podcast, webinar) and nurture your subscribers from day one.
  4. Collaborate with gatekeepers: Find people who already work with your ideal clients in a different capacity, and build mutually beneficial relationships.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. I go much deeper in an episode of the podcast and break down each step in detail. If you’re thinking about starting an online business (or restarting), this is a must-listen.

Let’s get that resilience muscle working and start taking action.

P.S. You don't need to go it alone. Collaborating with the right people can make all the difference! In case you missed it, the doors for the This Mother Means Business Community are closing November 15!
