Embarrassment, Networks, and Messy Action: The Real Startup Guide for Entrepreneurs

Starting a business is exhilarating, intimidating, and, let’s be real—sometimes downright embarrassing. After 10 years of entrepreneurship, I’ve had a chance to reflect on the lessons I wish I’d embraced earlier, especially while chatting with my sister (who’s starting her own business) and an old high school acquaintance dipping her toes into coaching.

These conversations reminded me of the foundational truths about starting something new—the truths that aren’t about strategy or hacks but about mindset and action. So, whether you’re launching your first offer, pivoting to something new, or simply dreaming of entrepreneurship, here are three lessons you can’t afford to ignore.

1. Embarrassment Is the Cost of Entry

Here’s the hard truth: starting something new requires you to step out of your comfort zone and face potential awkwardness. If you’re coming from a corporate background, it can be especially jarring. I’ve been there, hiding behind big brands like BMW, Nike, and Microsoft, where it was never about me but the company. Transitioning to entrepreneurship meant showing up as me, and honestly, it was terrifying.
I remember building my first business, CrossFit Bradford, and avoiding Instagram stories because I didn’t want to show my face. Looking back, I regret hiding behind the brand. What changed for me was seeing other entrepreneurs unapologetically showing up, creating content, and embracing their messy beginnings.
Take it from Amy Porterfield, who occasionally shares her early, cringeworthy videos. They’re proof that everyone starts somewhere—and that first step can feel a little embarrassing. But here’s the thing: nothing bad will happen if you get over the fear of looking silly. In fact, the only people who might criticize you are those who wouldn’t dare step into the arena themselves.

2. Your Network Is Your Net Worth

Your first clients will almost always come from your existing network. It might be a friend of a friend, your cousin’s co-worker, or even that girl from high school you haven’t spoken to in years. And yes, it might feel uncomfortable asking people you know for support—but it’s essential.
When I started my online business, my first clients were people I already knew: my wedding photographer, a former nutrition coaching client, and even connections from jobs I’d had 10 years prior. Leaning on your network isn’t just about sales; it’s about opening doors to opportunities you can’t access on your own.
This is advice I’ve been giving my sister as she builds her business and advice I’m taking myself as I plan my first live event in April 2025. Whether I’m looking for sponsors or speakers, I’m tapping into the network I’ve spent years cultivating. And trust me—there are people in your network who can help you land your next client or collaboration. You just have to ask.

3. Just Start (and Let It Be Messy)

The first version of your business won’t be perfect. In fact, it probably won’t even resemble what it will eventually become—and that’s okay.
When I started my online business, I launched an offer that I haven’t touched in over three years. It served its purpose at the time but didn’t align with where I wanted to go long-term. That’s the beauty of entrepreneurship: it’s an evolution.
Instead of getting stuck trying to craft the perfect offer or launch, treat your first year as an experiment. Try things, learn what works, and give yourself permission to pivot. Perfectionism will slow you down, but messy action will move you forward.

The Bottom Line

Building a business is equal parts grit, grace, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. It’s about overcoming embarrassment, leaning on your network, and starting before you feel ready.

So, if you’re in a season of starting something new, I’m cheering for you. Let 2025 be the year you step into your entrepreneurial journey with confidence. And remember, nothing bad will happen if you take that first awkward step—only growth.
