Community Over Competition: The Secret to Thriving as an Entrepreneurial Mom

entrepreneurship marketing Dec 16, 2024
As an entrepreneurial mom, it’s easy to feel like you’re in a constant balancing act—juggling work, family, and the pressure to stay competitive in your industry. But what if one of the best things you could do for your business (and your sanity) is to embrace community over competition?

In the latest episode of This Mother Means Business, I got personal about something that’s been on my heart: the people we surround ourselves with and how we choose to engage with those who might feel like “competition.” Here’s a hint: there’s enough sunshine for everyone, and leaning into community could be the best decision you make for yourself and your business.

The Power of Supporting Each Other

Recently, I hosted a community connection call—a space for entrepreneurial moms to connect, share, and support each other. After the call, a woman reached out to tell me she’s thinking about offering her own business mentorship program and wanted to see how I run things.
Was I upset? Not one bit. My response was, “Of course! You should totally do it. You’d be amazing.”

There was a time in my life when I might have felt threatened by this, but not anymore. I’ve learned that supporting others—especially those on a similar path—doesn’t take anything away from me. If anything, it creates opportunities for both of us to thrive.

The Beauty of Finding the Right Rooms

Another story I shared was about attending Mamacon, a one-day conference for entrepreneurial moms hosted by Leanne Kim. Leanne does work that’s exactly like mine—mentoring women in business and building communities.

When I was invited to her event, I wasn’t sure how it would feel to step into a space where someone else was doing what I do. But from the moment we connected, it was clear: this wasn’t about competition. It was about celebration.

We had an incredible conversation, and being in that room reminded me how important it is to find spaces where people genuinely want to lift each other up.

The Big Lesson: There’s Enough Sunshine for Everyone

There’s an old saying: “A rising tide lifts all ships.” It couldn’t be more true. The energy you put out into the world—whether it’s one of support or one of scarcity—comes back to you.

If you’re surrounding yourself with people who are competitive, unsupportive, or dismissive, it’s time to find a new room. The right people will not only cheer for you but also inspire you to be better, dream bigger, and grow stronger.

How to Embrace Community Over Competition

Here are a few ways to start shifting your mindset and finding your people:
  1. Reframe Competition: See others in your industry not as rivals but as potential collaborators.
  2. Seek Supportive Spaces: Join groups, calls, or events where the focus is on lifting each other up.
  3. Give Generously: Share your knowledge, encouragement, and opportunities without worrying about what you’ll get in return.
  4. Stay True to Your Flavor: Remember, your unique style and approach will resonate with the right people.

Let’s Build Something Beautiful Together

I created This Mother Means Business because I believe in the power of community. The relationships built here have been life-changing—not just for me but for so many women who’ve found support, accountability, and even lifelong friendships.

Whether it’s through this space or another, I encourage you to find your people and embrace the magic of collaboration. Trust me, everything becomes easier when you’re surrounded by the right energy.

You’ve got this—and there’s plenty of sunshine to go around.
