The Audacity to Take Up Space: Why Humility Might Be Holding You Back

As we close out another year and look ahead to what’s possible in 2025, I want to talk about something close to my heart: taking up space.

For too long, women—especially moms and entrepreneurs—have been taught to play small, stay quiet, and avoid “rocking the boat.” We’re told to be humble, not to show off, and to keep our dreams realistic. But if we’re going to chase the big, audacious dreams in our hearts, we need to rethink that narrative.

Let’s be real: humility has its place, but it shouldn’t be a roadblock to stepping into the version of you who achieves your wildest dreams.

What Does It Mean to Take Up Space?
Taking up space means claiming your worth unapologetically. It’s about showing up fully, confidently, and authentically in every room you step into—whether it’s your business, your family, or your community.

In a recent interview, Vice President Kamala Harris said something that stuck with me: “There’s a whole lot of women out here that don’t desire to be humble.” And honestly? I’m here for that.

Women are often conditioned to downplay their strengths or shrink themselves to fit into someone else’s idea of what we “should” be. But if we’re going to hit the big, hairy, audacious goals we dream of, we need to ditch that conditioning and own our power.

What Would Chad Do?
This reminds me of a concept shared by Vivian Kaye, the founder of Kinky Curly Yaki, who popularized the idea of “What Would Chad Do?” It’s about embodying the audacity of a stereotypical straight white man who applies for jobs he’s not qualified for, negotiates fearlessly, and assumes the world is his for the taking.

Chad doesn’t wait for permission. Chad doesn’t worry about being too much. And neither should you.

Audacity vs. Humility in Business
As an entrepreneur, your success hinges on your ability to sell yourself. That means showcasing your expertise, pitching yourself confidently, and leaning into your unique strengths. Being humble about your talents won’t attract clients or opportunities—it’s audacity that gets you noticed.

Here’s the truth:

The version of you that achieves your biggest goals isn’t meek or humble.
She’s bold, unapologetic, and ready to take up the space she deserves.
She knows she’s the best at what she does and doesn’t shy away from saying so.
Where Are You Hiding?

Take a moment to reflect:

  • Are you holding back from pitching yourself as a podcast guest or a speaker?
  • Are you hesitating to launch the business idea you’ve been dreaming about?
  • Are you avoiding hard conversations or partnerships that could help you grow?

If so, it’s time to channel your inner audacity. Lean into your authentic voice, your truth, and the things that matter most to you.

My Audacious Goal:
For me, leaning into audacity means growing the This Mother Means Business community to 1,000 women. Whether that happens in 2025 or later, I’m claiming it because I know this is the best space for mom entrepreneurs to connect, support one another, and grow their businesses.

And I’m not going to be humble about it.

What’s Your Audacious Vision for 2025?

As we step into the new year, I challenge you to imagine the boldest, most fearless version of yourself. What would she do if she wasn’t worried about being too much? What would she go after if she didn’t care about what others thought?

Now, go do it.

I’m rooting for you. Let’s make 2025 the year we take up all the space we deserve.
